a total of 1200 km of coastline and 750 beaches!
The coast is extremely versatile and you can find anything from tiny coves, sandy beaches, high cliffs to sheltered picturesque fishing ports and historic cities.
Topographically, a remarkable feature of Galicia is the presence of many fjord-like or firth-like inlets .These inlets, coves and bays are called rías. There are also a great number of capes which have been formed by Atlantic ocean erosion. The stunning, mostly completely deserted beaches are very diverse. |
Some beaches are rough and wild with big waves and cold water and the more protected ones are serene lagoons - very shallow, calm and the water pleasantly warm.
All along the Galician coast are many archipelagos near the mouths of the rías. These archipelagos provide protected deep water harbours and also habitat for seagoing birds. |
